PURPOSE:To simplify the run control part of a paper currency discriminator and to reduce the processing speed by saving photo information in a memory at a time by using DMA (direct memory access). CONSTITUTION:A CPU 1 starts the DMA 3 at the count-up timing of a timer after the start of a run of paper currency. The DMA 3 transfers the contents of a memory area 2 to a photo information control block A on receiving a start indication. When photo transmission data 9 is at high level, the outputs of counters 5 and 6 are '0' and the output of the photo information control block A is '0', so that '0' is overwritten in the memory area 2. When photo shield data 8 is at high level, data inputted from the memory area 2 is counted up by the counters 5 and 6 to obtain the output of the photo information control block A, and the original data of the memory area 2 is counted up and then overwritten.
