PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of a CCD that groups by four and transfers adjacent two lines of picture elements and a transfer action by giving to areas in each CCD connected to a connection gate greater potentials than that in a potential barrier area under the connection gate. CONSTITUTION:Signal charges of one line transferred to areas (b) and (d) of the CCD 1 from a gate 4c are transferred to a potential well area (cw) under a connection gate electrode 1c over the potential barrier area (cb). Moreover the charges are transferred to the areas (b) and (d) of the CCD 2 and the area (cw) under a connection gate electrode 2c. The moment the charges are transferred to the areas (b) and (c) of the CCD 3 signal charges under the gate 4c are transferred to the areas (b) and (d) of the CCD 1. Next only signal charges in the area (b) of the CCDs 1 and 3 are transferred to the areas (b) of the CCDs 2 and 4 through the areas (cw) of gates 1c and 3c. Then signal charges in the areas (b) of the CCDs 2 and 4 are transferred to the area (d) in each CCD, which waits for a half-line of picture elements.
