PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer suitable as electrical, electronic and automobile parts, etc., by purifying a polymer with a mixture of a specific hydrophobic organic solvent and water, thereby removing sodium salt and low- molecular weight component at a stroke. CONSTITUTION:(A) A polymerization reaction slurry of polyphenylene sulfide (e.g. produced by polymerizing p-dichlorobenzene in the presence of sulfur and sodium carbonate) is washed water preferably twice or thrice and is subjected to filtration, drying, etc., to reduce sodium content in the polymer to <=5wt%. The component A is mixed with (B) a mixed solvent produced by mixing (i) a hydrophobic organic solvent having a solubility in water of <=10 (e.g. hexane) and (ii) water at a weight ratio (ii/i) of preferably 5/95-95/5. The ratio of A to B is 2/98-40/60. The objective polymer can be produced e.g. by filtering the obtained mixture. The used solvent mixture is separated into two layers by letting stand and is recovered and reused.
