PURPOSE:To obtain a heat transfer oil which is liquid over a wide range of from a temp. below the freezing point to working temp. and has a high working temp. by reacting an alkylnaphthalene with benzyl chloride in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to bond them to each other. CONSTITUTION:An alkylnaphthalene is reacted with benzyl chloride in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to obtain a heat transfer oil mainly com posed of a benzylalkylnaphthalene having the formula, wherein R1 is methyl or ethyl; and R2 is H, methyl or ethyl. Said heat transfer oil contains benzylmonomethylnaphthalene, benzyldimethylnaphthalene, benzylmonoethylnaphthalene, benzyldimethylnaphthalene, or a mixture thereof. These compds. each have a m.p. of not higher than 0 deg.C, a high b.p. and good thermal stability. Among them, benzylmonomethylnaphthalene has the best thermal stability. |
