PURPOSE:To allow only a normal reproduction head to obtain a reproduced picture signal with an excellent S/N by using a reproduction head with width similar to a track pitch and reading a signal with an excellent S/N written in a memory right before a special reproduction starts. CONSTITUTION:The normal reproduction heads 4a and 5a have the same width as that of a track pitch. When the head 5a executes its normal reproduction, components in crosstalk from adjacent tracks become zero as figure shows, and the noise of the crosstalk disappears. As a result a reproduced picture signal with an excellent S/N can be obtained. When the head reproduces a still picture, parts 9a and 10b where a reproduction level in the envelope waveform of the output 15 of a head amplifier is lower than the threshold level of a reproduction processing circuit 16 arise to develop noise on a screen. However a noise-free reproduced image is written in a field memory 18 in a normal reproduction state right before a tape stops, and the output of the memory 18 is read at the time of reproducing a still picture.
