The invention relates to a method and a device for testing the vacuum in containers, particularly preserve containers. The method of the invention is a method for testing the vacuum in preserve containers 3 or the like, of the type including a wall portion 4 capable of being deformed under the action of the internal vacuum, characterised in that it consists in measuring the separation f between the centre of the said deformable wall portion 4 and the undeformable peripheral zone 4a adjoining the said portion, in comparing this separation with that existing for the same type of container not subjected to the vacuum and in generating a signal containing data and/or for triggering a rejection of or method of marking the defective container when the comparison signal exceeds an adjustable predetermined weighted threshold. Application in particular to checking correct closure of screw-top preserve jars. <IMAGE>
