摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a recording medium providing high density information recording/storage and recording reproduction of information through employment of a laser beam and the like by providing a recording layer containing naphtolactone system light absorbing coloring matter shown by a specific formula onto a substrate. CONSTITUTION:In an optical recording medium, a recording layer containing naphtolactone system light absorbing coloring matter shown by a general formula (I) is provided onto a substrate. Recording onto the optical recording medium is performed by irradiating a laser beam, preferably a semiconductor laser beam, focused to about 1mum diameter onto a recording layer or layers provided on one or two sides of the substrate. At the portion irradiated by the laser beam, thermal deformation such as decomposition, evaporation, fusion, etc. due to the absorption of the laser beam energy occurs in the recording layer, thus recording information. Reproduction of information is performed by reading out the difference in reflection factor between a thermally deformed portion and a non-deformed portion. The laser includes N2, He-Cd, Ar, He-Ne, ruby, semiconductor, coloring matter laser, etc., but preferably a semiconductor laser is employed from the viewpoint of light weight, easy handling and compactness.
