PURPOSE:To obtain classifications corresponding to the sensations of a human being by calculating relative light intensity data as to two primary colors predetermined on the basis of light intensity data by the three primary colors at plural positions and converting the mean value by a predetermined conversion expression. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a body to be classified is photographed by a TV camera and light intensity data on one object body by the three primary colors at plural positions are inputted to a computer. The relative light intensity data on two primary colors predetermined on the basis of said data are computed to normalize and also compress the data. The mean value of each body to be classified is calculated from the data to obtain data on the entire surface of the body to be classified. Two calculated mean values are converted by the predetermined conversion expression to calculate a single value for each body to be classified, and then data on the color of the body to be classified is further compressed. The single value is compared with a predetermined threshold value to classify the body by color ranges.
