Particularly in the case of electrolytic baths, it is advantageous to vary the amplitude of the load direct current (iL) periodically with a steep edge gradient, preferably such that said current briefly changes its polarity. For this purpose, a reversible-charge capacitor (C) is held at a specific charge state via a recharging device (30). A changeover switch (WS) connects the reversible-charge capacitor (C) cyclically to the load (L) such that the charge-reversal current (iC) (which is like a short circuit) is superimposed on the load direct current (iL) and is preferably in the opposite direction to it.
