PURPOSE:To effectively control the concentration of the electrolyte of a fuel cell by humidifying an electrolytic matrix by means of the steam generated on the catalyzer layer of an electrode, after supplying a mixture gas consisting of hydrogen and oxygen to at least either one of an oxidant electrode and a fuel electrode. CONSTITUTION:When any output voltage drop or temperature rise occurs in a cell during operation of a phosphoric acid type fuel cell, humidifying operation becomes necessary. Accordingly, a certain amount of mixture gas consisting of hydrogen and oxygen, that means the rate of air mixed in the fuel gas, is supplied to a fuel cell, with the concentration of air at the limit of explosion. Then, steam is generated from the boundary face of catalyzer layer to humidity the electrolyte. The grade of humidification is controlled on the basis of the concentration of air to be blended and the flow rate of fuel gas mixed with air. Thus, the volume of phosphoric acid can be expanded to continue normal operation. |
