PURPOSE:To make it possible to measure a distance without receiving the effect due to the color of an article to be measured by simple constitution utilizing visible light, by adjusting the interval between a projection optical system and a surface to be measured so that reflection brightness due to the irradiation beam of the surface to be measured becomes maximum. CONSTITUTION:The emitted light by the light source 1 and lens 2 of an optical sensor 10 is focused on a surface plate coming to a reference surface and reflected light having the maximum brightness is detected by a lens 3 and a beam receiving element 4 to perform the adjustment of the origin. In this state, the surface of an article 30 to be measured is similarly irradiated with light through a sensor 40 and the rising of a sensor holder 11 is controlled by a controller 17 through a motor driver 16, a pulse motor 14, a shaft screw 13, etc., so that the output of the element 4 becomes maximum and the emitted light is focused to a surface to be measured. The distance of the surface to be measured from the origin is displayed on a counter display part 20 corresponding to the control quantity by the controller 17. By this method, a distance is measured by simple constitution requiring no laser beam and using visible light without receiving the effect due to the color of the surface to be measured.
