Tetrahydrocarbon tin compounds of formula R4Sn may be separated from trihydrocarbon tin compounds of formula R3SnX where R is an alkyl or aryl radical having 2 to 18 carbon atoms and X is Cl, OH or OSnR3 by addition of methyl alcohol, whereby the trihydrocarbon tin compound passes into solution and the tetrahydrocarbon tin compound forms a separate phase which may be separated. When X is chloride, any dihydrocarbon tin chloride which may also be present also passes into solution: when X is hydroxide or OSnR3 any dihydrocarbon tin oxide which may be present does not dissolve in the methyl alcohol but remains with the tetrahydrocarbon tin in a separate phase. The temperature at which separation is carried out may be up to 60 DEG C. |
