PURPOSE:To provide an ignition lag period optimum to various operating states and to provide excellent engine performance, by a method wherein an ignition timing is controlled by feedback so that an actual ignition period is coincided with a desired ignition lag period. CONSTITUTION:According to an engine operating state detected by a detecting means A, a set means H orderly sets an optimum ignition period serving as a control target, and a detecting means J determines an actual ignition lag period by means of an injection timing and an ignition timing detected by detecting means B and C. A correction signal output means K outputs feedback correction signal to an ignition signal output means E so that an actual ignition lag period is coincided with a desired ignition lag period, and based on a signal from a crank angle detecting means D, and the output timing of an ignition signal is advanced or delayed for correction to drive an ignition device F. This constitution provides an ignition lag period optimum to various operating conditions, and enables provision of excellent engine performance.
