PRODUCTION OF MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PURPOSE:To obtain a medium which has good lubricity wear resistance and impact resistance and permits high density recoding by forming a vertically magnetized film on a substrate and forming a cobalt oxide film on the magnetized film in the state of a prescribed temp. or above. CONSTITUTION:This recording medium is constituted by providing a magnetic recording layer 2 consisting of the vertically magnetized film on the substrate 1 and providing the Co oxide layer on the layer 2. The layer 2 is formed by using the vertically magnetized film consisting of Co or Co alloy. The film 3 is formed by sputtering the Co as a target onto the film 2 in, for example, an inert gas contg. oxygen of a prescribed pressure while heating the nonmagnetic substrate 1 formed with the film 2 to 100-350 deg.C or executing vacuum deposition or ion plating with the Co as a vapor deposition source in dilute oxygen.
