PURPOSE:To manufacture a ferroalloy with superior rate of operation by moving an electrode up and down to keep resistance constant and by setting up the control range from the combination of electrode reactance, secondary voltage, and working electric power so as to estimate the length of electrode with high accuracy. CONSTITUTION:In a submerged-arc-type electric furnace, the electrode 5 is moved up and down to keep resistance practically constant. The reactance of the electrode 5 is determined from the electrode 5 voltage detected with a voltage detector 10b via a contact point 8 for voltage measurement and from the value of an electric current flowing to the electrode 5 detected with an electric current detector 10a, from which the length of electrode is estimated. The control range for safety operation is set up by the combination of the above reactance, secondary voltage, and working electric power. When the operation is carried out in this control range while keeping resistance practically constant, the electrode length can be estimated from the reactance with high accuracy, so that ferroalloy can be manufactured with stable operation.
