PURPOSE:To detect an inputted timing diagram, even if it is entered somewhat roughly, if it is within a section, by settling the section where the timing diagram is entered by means of a section settling means of a timing diagram reader. CONSTITUTION:An image which is read temporarily by a CCD and is stored in a storage part 5 has unit characters extracted by measuring the size of an isolated graphic form in a character image separating part 7. Thereafter, reference symbols written at four corners of an input form are retrieved by a reference symbol part 9, and symbol positions P1-P4 are obtained with coordinate values. Based on positions P1-P4, a virtual rectangle calculating part 11 calculates coordinates of a virtual rectangle t(mn) after obtaining the inclination and the degree of expansion/reduction of the image so that M-step N-signal description is possible. An image feature detecting pat 15 generates a histogram of the number of black picture elements in X and Y-axis directions based on the position of the virtual rectangle and performs raster scanning in the Y-axis direction to obtain the Y coordinate where the first black image element exists. The classification to which the timing diagram belongs to is decided 17 based on features of the picture.
