PURPOSE:To record reception data on a recording material in the prescribed size in a subscan direction regardless of the size of a reception original in a subscan direction by changing a subscan line made by a recording means in accordance with the number of the reception subscan lines of the reception original. CONSTITUTION:Data on a data signal 11 based on the reception original received through a communication circuit is stored in a data storage means 119. Subscan lines corresponding to one page of the reception original are measured, and such judgement is made whether drive and modulation in the subscan direction are necessary or not. Then a subscan information signal 125 expressing the drive state in the appropriate subscan direction is generated, and a main scan control means 139 reads out data stored in the data storage means 119. According to the subscan information signal 125, a recording means 147 is scanned and driven, and information expressed by a main scan direction information signal 137 read out by the main scan control means 139 is recorded in the recording material.
