PURPOSE:To obtain a complete form of alternate processing without affecting an access to a normal area, by retrieving an alternate record allocation table in the detecting time of a signal to indicate the failure of a table, and accessing to an alternate area corresponding to a defective area. CONSTITUTION:In a magnetic disk device, an alternate record allocation table ARAB 2 is retrieved only when a specific area is accessed, and the signal of the said area from a defective cylinder reference table DCRB 1 is detected, and the alternate area corresponding to the defective area is accessed. In this way, the complete form of alternate processing for the defective area is performed without affecting the access to the normal area, and the good access speed and high reliability can be obtained.
