A process for preparing methyl isocyanate by heating phenyl N-methylcarbamate in a decomposition zone to produce a vapor stream containing phenol and methyl isocyanate, and thereafter rapidly separating the methyl isocyanate from the phenol to inhibit formation of the starting compound phenyl N-methylcarbamate.
