PURPOSE:To extract a straight line, a connection line, etc., and to accurately extract feature values based on picture element values by providing the picture elements constituting a straight line of an image with picture element values indicating the straight line constitutional elements. CONSTITUTION:An objective image is stored in an image storing part 5 in an image feature value extracting device as a binary-coded linear image and prescribed labels are added to black and white picture elements in the picture elements of the linear image. The labels of the picture elements are detected by a straight line extracting part 1 and information as a horizontal line and a vertical line is extracted by a detailed feature value extracting part 2. The feature values consisting of the horizontal line and vertical lines extracted by the extracting parts 1, 2 and connection point information are stored in a feature value storing part 6. The picture elements to be an opening end of the information stored in the storing part 6 are extended in a point sequence direction and processed by a connection end detecting part 3 and the processed result is stored in the storing parts 5, 6 by a feature point reproducing point 4. Consequently, the feature values can be accurately extracted.
