PURPOSE:To decrease contact resistance in a cell, to enlarge the effective area of a catalyst layer, and to enhance cell performance by coating the surface of a sintered matrix layer with a paste catalyst obtained by kneading a catalyst containing PTFE with phosphoric acid, and combining it with a counter electrode. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst layer 2 containing PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is pressed against each of an oxidizing agent electrode 11 and a fuel electrode 12 which constitute a pair of electrode plates. The surface of the catalyst layer 2 has irregularity of several microns. A sintered type matrix layer 4 is formed on the catalyst 2 of the oxidizing agent electrode 11 by spreading the material obtained by kneading SiC containing PTFE with water, and sintered at 320 deg.C. The surface of the sintered matrix layer 4 has irregularity of several tens of microns. After impregnating phosphoric acid, a paste catalyst 3 is applied onto the matrix layer 4, and both electrodes 11, 12 are unified. Thereby, the catalyst layer 2 and the matrix layer 4 are closely bonded via the paste catalyst 3. |
