PURPOSE:To improve the heat resistance of an optical fiber by forming a core of a polymer consisting of a specific repeating unit. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber is constituted of the core formed of the polymer A consisting of the repeating unit expressed by the formula I and the clad formed of the polymer B having the refractive index smaller by >=0.02 than the refractive index of the polymer A. In the formula I, R<1> denotes H, alkyl of 1-3C; X denotes halogen; m denotes 1-5. The core can be formed of the copolymer of the repeating unit expressed by the formula I and methacrylate. The polymer of the repeating unit of the formula II is also usable as the polymer B. In the formula II, R<2> denotes H, alkyl of 1-3C; n denotes 0-6; p denotes 2-10. The heat resistance of the polymethyl methacrylate optical fiber is improved while the light transmittability and workability of said fiber are maintained according to the above-mentioned constitution.
