A liquid crystal compound showing ferroelectricity, extremely stable chemically, photochemically and to influence of electric field, etc., adjusting liquid crystal temperature and electro-optical characteristics mutually or by proper blending with another ferroelectric liquid crystal system, useful as an electro-optical display material. PREPARATION:4-Hydroxyphenylacetic acid shown by formula III and thiophene as starting raw materials are processed by several processes to form a compound shown by formula IV, which is subjected to Williamson reaction with a compound shown by formula V in ethanol in the presence of KOH to give a compound shown by formula I wherein j=k=0 and l=1. |
