PURPOSE:Polyvinyl acetate is copolymerized with maleic acid or the like and the copolymer is saponified, the modified PVA is dry-spun, latently crimped by allowing it to run on a hot plate, the crimped in a high-humidity atmosphere to readily produce the titled fiber without reduction in strength and at low costs. CONSTITUTION:Vinyl acetate is copolymerized with maleic acid or isopropenyl acetate and saponified to give a modified polyvinyl alcohol of 1-20mol% saponification degree. The resultant modified VAN is dry-spun at 70-150 deg.C drawing and heat-setting temperature at 2-6 draw ratio to give a yarn. The yarn is latently crimped by allowing it to run on a hot plate of 10-100cm contact length at 140-210 deg.C surface temperature and crimps are developed in a high humidity atmosphere of 75-95% relative humidity or in hot air at 100-180 deg.C to give the objective crimped vinylon.
