PURPOSE:To provide an array different from the other array by arranging a liquid crystal to be filled between electrodes disposed on the inside of a pair of substrates on one of them and supplying a thermal or optical energy to a means for specifying a non-volatile array of the liquid crystal disposed on the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:On the surface of the one substrate 3 of an optical memory disk, the transparent counter electrode 4 and the means (NVL) 5 for specifying the non-volatile orientation of the crystal liquid are disposed and on the inside surface of the other substrate 3', the electrode 4' and an orientation film 7 are disposed. Between the orientation film 7 and the NVL 5, the liquid crystal 6 is filled. Optical beam or thermal beam is converged and irradiated to the liquid crystal in the vicinity of the NVL 5 or the NVL 5, and then, the orientation of the liquid crystal specified by the NVL 5 can be changed to the second orientation different from the first initial orientation. |
