PURPOSE:To protect an important file from deletion and to prevent the file from being deleted by mistake by designating the deleting prohibition of a file stored in an external memory device in a character processing device. CONSTITUTION:When a list displaying key FDSP is inputted, a list of the file stored in an external memory device DISK is transferred and displayed to a buffer DBUF. Displaying is executed only concerning the file in which a flag is 0 or 1, a deleting prohibition is instructed for the file in which the flag is 1, and therefore, a star is displayed at the area of prohibition when the list is displayed. When a prohibiting/releasing key FINH is inputted, a file stored in the device DISK is retrieved from the file name of a cursor position and the flag of the said file is set to a prohibiting flag FLG. The prohibiting flag FLG is decided and when the flag FLG is 0, the said flag of the device DISK is set to 1 and the deleting prohibition is executed.
