PURPOSE:To realize a flat scanner which does not any projection part for a sensor by dividing a hologram disk into two and forming patterns for reading an article operation direction at the inner peripheral part and an article bar code at the outer periphery. CONSTITUTION:The hologram disk 21 is divided into two, and outer peripheral segments 22 form the pattern for reading the article bar code. Inner peripheral segments 12 form patterns 1', 2', and 3' for detecting the operation direction of an article. When the article 1 is operated on a scanner from right to left and the segments 12 turn on in the order of 1', 2', and 3', normal operation is decided and a mirror 24 moves through the operation of a magnet 26, so that the article bar code 4 is read with the patterns of the outer peripheral segments 22. When the segments turn on in the opposite direction, no read is made. Consequently, the flat scanner is realized while the projection for the sensor which is obstructive is eliminated.
