PURPOSE:To eliminate a difference in retardation and a difference in reflection due to the thickness of an electrode and to obtain high quantity even in birefringent mode by providing an electrode group which takes part in illumination display and an electrode group which does not take part on the electrode surface of a substrate. CONSTITUTION:This device is equipped with display electrodes 2, lead-around electrodes 3 for connection with external terminals, terminal electrodes 4 for external connection, and additional electrodes 5 and 6. The electrodes 5 face one of the group of the lead-around electrodes 8 for external connection and to not take part in the display. On the other hand, electrodes 11 and 12 are provided by being formed on the substrate 7 as well as a signal electrode substrate 1. The liquid crystal layer composed of the substrates 1 and 7 is uniform in thickness in the majority of the area and a difference in color tone due to a difference in the thickness among electrodes is eliminated. |
