PURPOSE:To improve the S/N at reproduction by providing a circuit retarding a changeover command of a side select signal at data write until the end of an erase gate signal. CONSTITUTION:A delay circuit 33 connected to a write gate signal line 22 via NOT circuit 32 is provided as an erase gate signal forming circuit, which gives a delay time T=L/V corresponding to an interval L between a read/write gap 2 and erase gaps 4, 5 to the write gate signal. The 1st and 2nd erase circuits 34, 35 connected between the delay circuit 33 and the 1st, 2nd erase heads 6a, 6b supply selectively an erase current in response to the side select signal. In retarding a changeover command of the side select signal, the erasure is applied corresponding to a sector scanned by a write head on the side selected so far and a data of an old track does not remain along a new write track. Thus, the S/N at the write is improved.
