PURPOSE:To make it possible to prevent printing data from being erroneously printed in a printing inhibited area on a printing medium, by discriminating, by calculations, the positional relationship between the printing inhibited area discriminated based on information read from information previously printed on the printing medium and printing positions calculated from the printing data supplied from a host device. CONSTITUTION:A device having an optical reading function and a printing processing function is provided with a recognizing means 8 for discriminating a printing inhibited area set on a printing medium, based on data optically read from information previously printed on a printing medium, a means 9 for calculating printing positions on the medium based on printing data transferred from a host deice, and a means 10 for discriminating, by calculations, the positional relationship between the printing inhibited area discriminated by the recognizing means 8 and the printing positions for the printing data calculated by the calculating means 9. In printing the printing data transferred from the host device, printing processing is prevented from being conducted at positions discriminated to be in the printing inhibited area by the calculating and discriminating means 10.
