A two cycle hot gas engine has the working piston (3) coaxial to a compression piston (4) with the shaft of the compression piston set into a blind bore in the working piston to create a pneumatic buffer volume (20.1). The outer end of the compression piston has a second blind bore which slides over an axial rod fixed to the end wall (7) to form a second pneumatic buffer volume (20.2). The pistons cam be further linked by magnets or by mechanical means.
