MONITORING METHOD FOR CELL CULTURE

PURPOSE:To make exact measurement of the number of cells even in the case of having an intricate pattern and background by digitizing the cultured cell image taken into a device, processing the same by using a space filter and measuring the condition of the cultured cells. CONSTITUTION:The cell image in a culture vessel is inputted to an image processor by using a TV camera connected to a microscope. The taking-in of the cultured cell image is executed in the focal position where the distinct image having bright luminance in the central part of the cultured live cells and dark luminance in the peripheral part thereof is obtd. by deviating the focus from the state where the focus is thoroughly matched. The cultured cell image is taken in at the point of the time when the magnification inscribing the square shape of the space filter matrix of the size assigned by one cultured live cell is attained. The image is then binary coded by the suitable threshold value, and the picture element in the part where there is the live cell is made 1 and the picture element of the part where there is no live cell is made 0. The number of the live cells is calculated in accordance with (the number of the live cells = the number of the picture elements where there are the live cells/the number of the picture elements where one live cell exists). The exact measurement is made if the similar calculation is made with the number of the dead cells.
