NEW MATERIAL:A hydantoin derivative expressed by formula I and salt thereof. EXAMPLE:1-(alpha-Naphthalenesulfonyl)hydantoin. USE:Useful as an aldose reductase inhibitor, having very powerful inhibitory activity against aldose reductase and utilizable as a preventive drug for cataract, peripheral neuropathy, retinopathyl, nephropathy, etc., with low toxicity. PREPARATION:Naphthalenesulfonyl chloride expressed by formula II is reacted with glycine to synthesize naphthalenesulfonylglycine, which is then reacted with ammonium thiocyanate to afford a thiohydantoin derivative. The resultant derivative is further oxidized to provided the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
