PURPOSE:To provide a novel copolymer having specified average molecular weight, constituted by conjugated diene component unit, alpha,beta-unsaturated nitrile one and COOH group-contg. alpha,beta-unsaturated compound one. CONSTITUTION:The objective copolymer with a weight-average molecular weight 1,000-50,000 on a polystyrene basis, can be obtained by copolymerization between (A) 30-90wt% of a conjugated diene monomer (e.g. 1,3-butadiene, hexadiene, chloroprene), (B) 10-50wt% of an alpha,beta-unsaturated nitrile monomer (e.g. acrylonitrile), and (C) 0.1-30wt% of a COOH group-contg. alpha,beta-unsaturated compound of formula I (R<1> is H or CH3; R<2> is 2-6C alkylene; R<3> is phenylene, cyclohexylene, etc.) (e.g. a compound of formula II). USE:When incorporated, as a flexibilizer, in an epoxy resin prepolymer, an epoxy resin composition outstanding in mechanical strength, peel strength and flexibility suitable for adhesives, coatings, etc., can be obtained.
