Process for degassing and refining molten aluminium and alloys thereof

A process for degassing and refining aluminium and alloys thereof by treatment with a mixture of hexachloroethane and oxidising agent is described. For the purpose of improved and complete decomposition of the hexachloroethane and of avoiding the formation of toxic by-products, a pressed piece consisting of a mixture of hexachloroethane and an oxidising agent is introduced into the melt; in the mixture, the oxidising agent is present in an excess of up to 10%, relative to the oxidation of the C content in the hexachloroethane to carbon dioxide. According to a special embodiment of the invention, the oxidising agent used is a mixture of alkali metal chlorate and manganese dioxide.
