PURPOSE:To execute high speed casting and to reduce a deviation of a casting slab width in a continuous caster with large variation for the casting slab width, by measuring continuously the casting slab drawing resistance, which is not forecasted, and executing changing of a mold width in accordance with changing rate of the resistance by the on-line. CONSTITUTION:A standard slab drawing resistance R1 is calculated by a standard slab drawing resistance arithmetic unit 12 from the width and the casting speed of the casting slab 4 poured. In the other side, electric current of pinch rolls for the continuous caster is measured by a slab drawing measuring device 10, and in this result, the actual slab drawing resistance R2 is obtd. Next the difference of the standard slab drawing resistance calculated value R1 and the actual slab drawing resistance R2 is considered as a variable of the slab drawing resistance for the continuous caster from a mold width variable setting device 11 and from this value, the correcting value of the mold width for the continuous caster is obtd. to input to a mold width variable arithmetic unit 6. In this way, the high speed casting is executed, and even if, in case of the continuous caster having large variable slab width, the deviation of the slab width is reduced and capacity of the width rolling reduction equipment in the rolling process is not necessary to increase and the casting slab is supplied directly from the continuous caster without a sizing mill.
