A method for the analysis of variations of density of an article in the form of a cigarette, in which : - one area of said article is subjected to radioactive radiation of the beta type, - the intensity of said radiation is measured after passing through said article, - said article is made to travel in the longitudinal direction ; - the variations of the intensity measured are recorded, characterised in that : - said area has a longitudinal dimension L less than or equal to 1 mm, and - the measurements of intensity are recorded each time the movement of said article is at least equal to L.
