The device contains a storage rack (1), in which cassettes (10) with storage material (11) rest on L-shaped rails (5, 6). The rear part of the cassettes (10) is provided with rollers (13, 14), while the front part of the cassettes (10) rests directly on the supporting rails (5, 6). The front part of the cassette (10) is provided with a U-shaped rail (91), open towards the bottom, into which gripping apparatuses (90) with rollers (95 to 97) can be introduced. These gripping apparatuses (90) are located on the ends of arms (27, 28) which are pivotably mounted in the region of the cheeks (2, 3) of the rack (1). Moreover, the height of these arms (27, 28) is also variable. With the aid of the arms (27, 28), the front part of the cassette (10) can be lifted and the whole cassette then moved. The mode of operation of such a storage device can be pre-programmed and can proceed fully automatically. The racks of such a storage device can have different depths and/or widths, and moreover they do not need to be set up along a particular line in order to be able to be operated. <IMAGE>
