PURPOSE:To reduce the axial dimension of an automatic transmission considerably and to improve the mountability onto a vehicle by employing such structure that a clutch is arranged at the input shaft side while a planetary gear mechanism and a brake are arranged at the output shaft side. CONSTITUTION:Two drive gears 18, 20 are arranged concentrically with an input shaft 14 which is coupled through a torque converter 12 with an engine 10 such that each gear 18, 20 can be coupled with the input shaft 14 through the clutches 22, 24. The gears 18, 20 are geared respectively with the driven gears 26, 28 arranged concentrically with the output shaft 16 where the gear 26 is coupled with each sun gear 34, 42 of the first and second planetary gear sets in a planetary gear mechanism 30 and the gear 28 is coupled with the internal gear 40 of the second planetary gear set. A first pinion carrier 38 is made securable to the static section through a brake 48 and an unilateral clutch 50, and both sun gears 34, 42 are made securable to the static section through a brake 52.
