The invention relates to an applanation tonometer. According to the invention, it includes a body 1, a rod 7 carrying a contact disc 8 and whose surface is adapted so as to interact with the cornea of the eye and to transmit thereto a force, a unit for measuring this force, a device for monitoring the moment when the required diameter of the applanation circle on the cornea is achieved, and a recording unit 19; the monitoring device is made in the form of a tubular casing 12, whose internal diameter is equal to the given value of the diameter of the applanation circle; the tonometer also includes a set of contacts, electrically connected to the recording unit 19 and mechanically connected to the tubular casing 12, the contacts 13 of the set being closed when the surface 9 of the disc 8 and the tip of the tubular case 12 are in the same plane. The invention applies in particular to the field of medicine and in particular to ophthalmia. <IMAGE>
