This method consists in detecting the position g of the unbalanced mass P, in returning this to above the rotational axis G of the roll 10 and in keeping it there for a predetermined time by stopping the rotation of the drive motor so as to cause the mass of liquid constituting the unbalanced mass P to move downwards by the effect of gravity, then in recommencing these various stages until the unbalanced mass is substantially eliminated. According to the invention, the position of the unbalanced mass P is determined by detecting the variation in load of the drive motor of the roll 10. This variation in load of the drive motor can be detected with the aid of sensors connected to the motor and measuring the variation in the torque of this motor, by measuring deformations of the deformable fixtures or fixtures connecting the motor to its support or, in the case where the motor is an asynchronous, by measuring the variation in cos phi or in the speed of the latter. <IMAGE>
