For swimming pools, use is made of coverings which exhibit a carrying layer and an insulating layer connected thereto. Preferably, use is made of air-chamber sheets, in the case of which the air chambers are arranged with respect to one another such that continuous grooves or longitudinal slots are obtained at least in one direction. The covering is guided onto the water surface with the carrying layer directed towards the shaft and between the pool edge and the shaft. The shaft is assigned a parallel water tube which is arranged at a distance therefrom and has nozzles distributed over it, via which water is sprayed continuously onto the insulating layer exhibiting the air chambers or the longitudinal slots or grooves. Consequently, the unwinding of the covering is facilitated, winding up is improved, owing to close abutment of the individual layers, and automatic cleaning of the underside of the covering is achieved. By means of a hollow tube, which is assigned to the transverse end bar connected to the sheet in an offset manner, and a bracing tube assigned to the shaft, it is possible to brace the entire covering on the two opposite pool edges in an effective manner, with the result that the covering also serves at the same time as a safety covering. <IMAGE>
