PURPOSE:To detect the wrong use of a stolen card or the like by counting the number of times of disaccord and storing the counted value in a non-volatile programmable memory of the card and setting the protection mode if this value exceeds a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:An inputted password number is inputted to an operation processing part 20 through an I/O 11 and a data buffer 12, and it is discriminated by a validity discrimination processing means 21 whether the password number is valid or not. If the password number is invalid, the contents of a collation register 31 are incremented, and the incremented value is recorded in the register 31. If the password number is valid, the contents of the register 31 are set to an initial value. In case of collation, the contents B of the register 31 are read and compared with a preliminarily set prescribed value A. When the contents B of the register 31 are larger than said value A, a control flag 32 is set, and this setting is detected by a discrimination processing means 26, and the IC card is switched to the lock mode and set to an unusable state.
