An A.C. to D.C. converting arrangement comprises an A.C. energized mechanical pump for circulating liquid metal through a D.C. MHD generator. A cooler unit is provided in the fluid circuit to control the temperature of the liquid metal. The pump is preferably of the centrifugal type and the liquid metal is Na, NaK, Hg or K. The output may be controlled either by varying the speed of the pump or by providing a valve in the fluid circuit to control the flow directly or through a by-pass connection. It is also stated that the output of the generator may be varied by either altering the transverse spacing of the electrodes or by varying the excitation of the generator electromagnet.</p> |
