<p>A composition characterised in that it comprises a complex of:
(a) a titanium-containing material corresponding to the following general formula:

wherein X1 represents cyclopentadienyl, chlorine, bromine or C1-C6 alkoxy; X2 and X3 independently represent chlorine, bormine or C1-C6 alkoxy; Y1 and Y2 independently represent chlorine or bromine; and Z represents hydrogen or a C1-C10 hydrocarbyl group; and
(b) a complexing agent selected from:
(i) ethers corresponding to the following general formula: R1OR2 wherein R1 and R2 represent C1-C4 alkyl;
(ii) cyclic ethers corresponding to the following general formula;

wherein n represents an integer of from 4 to 7; and
(iii) tertiary amines
is disclosed.
<??>A process for the methylenation of a carbonyl group characterised in that it comprises reacting a carbonyl-containing compound having no alpha-hydrogen atoms with a titanium composition which comprises a complex of:
(a) a titanium-containing material corresponding to the following general formula:

wherein X1 represents cyclopentadienyl, chlorine, bromine or C1-C6 alkoxy; and Y1 and Y2 independently represent chlorine or bromine; and
(b) a complexing agent selected from:
(i) ethers corresponding to the following general formula: R1OR2 wherein R1 and R2 represent C1-C4 alkyl;
(ii) cyclic ethers corresponding to the following general formula:

wherein n represents an integer of from 4 to 7; and
(iii) tertiary amines
