A process for adhering a viscous coating on a polymeric material and the coated article are disclosed. The process is particularly useful for binding hyaluronic acid on intraocular or contact lenses to provide a lens having a viscous mechanical barrier to avoid damaging the eye. Initially the lens, for example, polymethylmethacrylate, is treated to polarize the surface. Thereafter the surface is coated with a solution of hyaluronic acid and the free and bound water is removed. Polarization is preferably performed by water plasma treatment of the lens surface. The resultant film is tenaciously bound to the lens surface.
