PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a herbicide without using complicate reaction system and facilitating waste water treatment, by reacting tert-butyl isocyanate with 3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. CONSTITUTION:A tert-butyl halide is made to react with a metal cyanide which is easily available at a low cost in the presence of zinc chloride catalyst in a solvent such as acetic acid ester at 0-200 deg.C to obtain tert-butyl isocyanate. The objective compound is produced by reacting the isocyanate with 3-(3- hydroxyphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea without separating and purifying the isocyanate from the reaction mixture. The carbamation reaction is carried out by using 1.1-2.0pts. of tert-butyl isocyanate per 1pt. of 3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1- dimethylurea. |
