PURPOSE:After reaction between vinyl acetate, halogen and alcohol, the reaction mixture is neutralized, the product is separated into the upper layer and the lower layer, then the titled compound is obtained from the upper layer, while the lower layer is distilled together with water and the distillate is reused to give the titled compound with high efficiency. CONSTITUTION:The reaction between vinyl acetate, a halogen preferably chlorine or bromine and an alcohol preferably methanol or ethanol is followed by neutralization of the reaction mixture. The neutralized product separates into two layers and the objective halogenoacetaldehyde dialkyl acetal is obtained from the upper layer. The lower layer is combined with water, preferably in an amount of 0.7-1.5 time the molar quantity of the neutralized salt in the lower layer and distilled. The distillate is allowed to return back to the reaction system and reused. Thus, the titled compound is collected in high efficiency. USE:An intermediate of medicines and agrochmicals. An intermediate of modifiers for water-soluble polymers.
