A gas measuring and warning device having a test tubelet through which the gas to be detected flows as well as having a photoelectric scanning device which contains an imaging optical system by means of which the test tubelet is imaged on the light-sensitive row of the sensor elements is to be improved with regard to the light intensity and the imaging quality in order to obtain a low-noise, highly resolved measurement signal. This is achieved by providing that the imaging optical system (4) contains a cylindrical lens (5) of which the cylinder axis is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the test tubelet (1) and to the row of the sensor elements (6). Other useful developments provide the use of an achromatic lens (objective) (9) as imaging lens, and of an interference filter (7) and a pulsed light source as the light source (3). <IMAGE>
