In a heat exchanger, in particular for use in underground mining, for the purpose of cooling or heating air/gas, e.g. mine air, which flow in via a gas inlet into ducts bounded by heat exchange surfaces and leave via a gas outlet, it being the case that some or all of the heat exchange surfaces are provided with a coating which increases the surface area and can be subjected to a cooling or heating medium, it is provided according to the invention that the transport of heat from or to the coatings of increased surface area takes place principally by means of vapour exchange, only this vapour penetrating from or into the region of the coatings of increased surface area, and the moisture carrier (e.g. air) is only led past the heat exchange surfaces at a slight distance, and that the gas inlet is preferably formed in the case of air coolers by a rotating filter and guides the inflowing gas in a contactless fashion past the preferably rotating heat exchange surfaces, whose increased surface area is formed by gamma alumina applied using an immersion method and spins condensate off from the enlarged heat exchanger surfaces especially through separation by centrifugal force.
